THE PRE-PRODUCTION FILES: CREATING A STORYBOARD

Story boards play an important role in your pre-production planning. They look like the comic strips you see in the Sunday nation; Popeye, the Phantom and Flash Gordon (which is not ‘The Flash’ totally different superheroes). They give a basic and rough idea of what is happening in each and every scene as well as the shots, angles, transitions and audio to be used – in other words it’s a blue print for your masterpiece.
For a script writer creating a storyboard is turning your script from words to a second stage visual interpretation before the final product. Remember your storyboard does not need to be fully detailed; it should bring out the main idea in each scene.

Having a storyboard helps you to keep track of your scenes that you have and have not shot. If you’re working with a crew it helps to explain your vision so everyone has an idea.  It also acts as a reference during filming and editing because it has the audio and video description so you know the order the scenes in your film. An audio description includes the soundtrack; sound or songs to be used and the video description includes the cinematic techniques to be used in the scenes.
Anybody can make a storyboard you don’t have to be the world’s greatest artist but your drawings should be clear enough to see the subjects in the scene and the angle of the camera.
I took the liberty into making a template for a story board, feel free to download and edit it to your preferences! Have any queries? Post a comment below :)
