Innovation, creativity and confidence exuded from the students who attended Brookhouse school's annual Ted X event this past Saturday. I was absolutely honoured to be in the presence of such cultured and unique thinkers expressing their ideas in an eloquent and articulate manner. Us students of the Aga Khan Academy had come to offer our moral support towards our fellow students: Zanir Kurji and Minahil Qureshi who proudly represented the school. Their talks being on "What defines cleverness" and "What it means to be Kenyan" respectively. They were absolutely brilliant to say the least.
A full day event jam-packed with lively performances and educational talks that had me back tracking my current mindset. The lovely thing about presenting a Ted Talk is that you get to provide your own insight and / or creative, brand new solution to approach a situation that we combat on a daily basis. I saw young minds who had successfully established businesses and independent organisations for environmental conservation, youth who had literally risked their lives in hopes of sharing the silent voices oppressed by social injustice, scientific discoveries, artists and people offering solutions drawing up proposals and working hand in hand with the government to curb issues that we our society is currently facing. It all starts at a tender age folks and we need to cultivate such attitudes at a young age. I am not saying that we ought to be proliferating the Mark Zuckerberg's of tomorrow but rather contributing positively to growing our communities even in those small ways that you believe don't really matter.
All of the talks were astounding. I am not saying this just for the sake of it, but because I really did enjoy the content, plus it takes guts to stand in front of such a large crowd and present. However, I am going to be biased for a bit - if you'll allow me - and mention one specific Ted Talk that I personally enjoyed the most, the subject being, patriotism presented by Kena (in the picture above). These are the kind of thought provoking discussions that I really love and force the people to re-evaluate their personal choices and consider the value of their contributions to society. Hopefully within the week the Ted x page will be edited and you can have a gander at the amazing content that was presented.
Brook house, known for their outstanding musical talent did not disappoint especially on this occasion. The last performance nearly brought me to tears and that's rare for a person like me with a stone-henge visage and not to mention the magnificent performance from a former student of our school.
Granted that there wasn't ample amount of time for socialising and networking I managed to get a few brief moments to meet some of the presenters and squeeze in a few moments of catch up with friends during the breaks who attended the event.
Anyways I'm off to bury myself in the plethora of assignments I have procrastinated up until now. Bye.
